The Washington Federation of Independent Schools (WFIS) is the umbrella organization for private education in Washington State. With seventy percent of the independent student population enrolled in member schools, WFIS is the only statewide vehicle for regular communication and strategic development between the many different constituencies. WFIS schools are affiliates of the Catholic dioceses in the state; the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI); the Christian Schools International (CSI); Lutheran Schools; Montessori schools; the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools (PNAIS); the Seventh-day Adventist Schools (SDA); and numerous other religious and independent institutions, including the Waldorf Schools, Hutterian Brethren, and those institutions with sponsorship within the Jewish and Islamic communities. The WFIS Board of Directors consists of eighteen school heads representing the major constituencies chosen regionally by their respective bodies. WFIS is networked with similar organizations in other states through the Council for American Private Education (CAPE).

Legislative Update
Thank you for your continued response to our Action Alerts! While SHB 1329 continues to progress in spite of our efforts, 2SHB 2731 has been amended in a manner which is acceptable from our position, and HB 2996 is expected to pass:
HB 1329 (providing collective bargaining for child care center directors and workers). No word yet on whether this bill made it out of Senate Ways and Means on February 27.
2SHB 2731 (relating to implementing a program of early learning for educationally at-risk children). The bill has been amended to remove the early learning program from basic education and adds that the Legislature intends to create an entitlement for a program of early learning for educationally at-risk children.
HB 2996 (including approved private schools in record check rules). There seems to be no opposition to this bill and it is expected to pass.

Best of Washington 2010: Chris Gavin, Wayne & Darla Pumphrey, Lorraine and Fulton Buntain, Jackie Matthews, Bob Christian, Anne and Darrell Jesse, Mike Colbrese
As the Washington Federation of Independent Schools completes its FORTIETH ANNIVERSAY YEAR, once again, the Liberty Theater in Puyallup, Washington, provided a beautiful venue to honor the "Best of Washington" Award winners of 2009-2010. Each individual selected has contributed substantially to the advancement of private education in our state. The honorees were chosen by the WFIS Board of Directors from the many outstanding applications submitted by our member schools in all parts of the state. Each year it becomes more difficult to choose these honorees, as each category is filled with deserving educators who excel in their chosen field of endeavor.
WFIS was honored to have former director, Stephen Dinger, as our Keynote Speaker. After serving as Executive Director for nine years, Stephen served on the DuPont City Council, then did a stint as DuPont City Manager before being called back into private education as Principal of St. John's Lutheran School in Bakersfield, California. He spoke to the group about a "Trip to Disneyland," outlining how our schools can learn lessons about customer service, mission and organization from the vision of Walt Disney and his theme parks.
Seven things we can learn from Disneyland:
We need to be:
-
Clear about what business we're in
-
Crystal clear who our market is
-
All on board with the mission
-
Attentive to the details
-
Certain that all employees "fit the job"
-
Always mindful: "It's all about relationships"
-
Committed to each other's success ... learn from each other and stand together
The evening concluded with honoring our outstanding contributors to private education:
Outstanding Program Director
Jackie Matthews
Exceptional Administrator
Chris Gavin
Outstanding Public Official
Mike Colbrese
Exemplary Grandparents
Darrell and Anne Jesse
Teachers of the Year
Wayne and Darla Pumphrey

SAVE THE DATE: Statewide Private Schools Conference to be held June 21 and 22, 2010. Eastside workshop to be held at Gonzaga University; Westside workshop to be held at Seattle Pacific University. NO COST FOR PRIVATE SCHOOL PARTICIPANTS!
Annually, private schools are required to notify the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and local school districts as to their intent to participate in federal supplemental education programs through their local school district. Choosing to participate in available programs allows eligible private school students, teachers and other education personnel access to services under these programs. The notification process is done via the Private Participation in Federal Programs (Intent to Participate) form in the Educational Data System (EDS), which is due to OSPI by March 2, 2010. Please contact the Consolidated Federal Programs office at (360) 725-6225 or email kara.larson@k12.wa.us if you have any questions.

Manual High School Provides Blueprint for Student Success. Manual High School in Denver was in such trouble that district officials closed the school. At the time, students at Manual had the lowest test scores of any public school in Colorado. Today, Manual High, which serves mostly poor and minority children, is one of the most successful public schools in the state, with the highest test scores of any urban school. Manual High's turn-around is so remarkable that recently Washington Policy Center flew Manual's principal, Rob Stein, to Seattle to share lessons with public school leaders... Read the rest here >>
